There is no doubt that working in the solar business gives one a new perspective on the coming of spring. We always knew that homeowners often take the winter to plan home improvements that they actually implement in the spring, we just didn’t know to what degree.
While we meet people who are considering solar and wind installation in the warmer months, we also see plenty of activity on the energy efficiency front. Before we install solar panels or wind turbines, we are required by NYSERDA to perform a basic energy audit on the property. It doesn’t make sense to add a renewable energy component to a building that wastes heat and electricity.
This is why NYSERDA and other like-minded organizations are establishing a presence this winter. All over the state you can see that municipalities and community organizations are offering informational seminars on energy audits and how to make your home or business more energy efficient.
What is even more interesting is how many of these events are occurring early in February, right when warmer weather is on the brain! The NYSERDA Events Page reveals free energy workshops happening in places all over New York State: Rome (center state); Brunswick (near Albany); the City of Schenectady; and Ravena (Hudson River Region).
Closer to the city, Westchester County residents recognize the importance of education for adults and kids alike. The Tarrytown Environmental Council is hosting the Staying Cozy/Saving Money Family Energy Fair where “local homeowners and renters learn about the simple things they can do to reduce their energy use while saving money and the environment.”
So, if you are planning your annual spring cleaning, do us a favor and include energy efficiency as a part of the plan. Get an energy audit, consider solar and wind power, and save a ton of money!
